The kind of coffee which scores everywhere : xtra fruity supported with body and sweetness.

Origin and Harvest

Ethiopia's coffee production is intricately tied to the rhythm of its three main seasons. The Bega season (October to January) brings an extended dry spell, essential for harvesting and processing coffee. Following this, the Belg season (February to May) introduces the first rains, fostering coffee flowering and the early stages of fruit development. The Krempt season (June to September) is characterized by heavy rainfall from the east, nurturing the cherries through their final stages of growth and ripening. As the rains abruptly end in late September, the coffee cherries reach full maturity, paving the way for an energetic harvest season beginning in November.

About Ephtah Specialty Coffee

Ephtah Specialty Coffee is driven by a mission to build sustainable and inclusive supply chains that benefit farmers, customers, and communities alike. The company places a strong emphasis on empowering women within the coffee industry, acknowledging their pivotal contributions to Ethiopia's social and economic progress. Quality is at the heart of Ephtah's operations, ensuring that every shipment of green coffee beans meets the highest standards while fostering satisfaction across all stakeholders in the supply chain.

Ephtah is equally committed to social impact and environmental sustainability. Farmers working with Ephtah receive upfront payments upon delivery of their coffee, followed by quality premiums, additional payouts, and support for educational expenses. Future plans include expanding the Ama Commitment program, constructing a water tank to improve cherry flotation, increasing drying bed capacity, and diversifying agricultural crops to bolster local food security and market stability.

A cornerstone of Ephtah's vision is sustainable community development. This is reflected in efforts to support the cultivation of false banana, used to produce Kocho, a traditional Ethiopian staple, underscoring a holistic approach to resilience and food security.

Gotiti Farm: A Legacy of Care and Dedication

Tigist, whose name in Amharic translates to "patience," manages a small, family-inherited farm spanning 2 hectares at an elevation of 2,150–2,200 meters above sea level. Her farm is home to heirloom coffee varietals, producing up to 3,000 kilograms of green coffee each season. During the harvest, she employs up to 15 seasonal workers to handpick cherries, which are then dried on raised beds for 15 days to ensure optimal quality.

Beyond her own harvest, Tigist also collects cherries from neighboring producers, supporting the broader community. Her operation includes 150 raised drying beds, and she employs 70 seasonal workers during the peak harvest period, alongside 10 permanent employees who assist year-round.

Tigist is an active participant in the Ama Commitment initiative, which reinforces her role in driving economic and social progress in her region. Under this program, she receives 60% of her payment upfront when delivering her coffee, with the balance paid after the exporter finalizes transactions with buyers. Moreover, Tigist benefits from Ephtah Coffee's pre-financing support, which covers 20% of her payment upfront, demonstrating a collaborative approach that underpins her success.

Challenges and Future Outlook

This year brought significant challenges due to inflation-control policies implemented by the National Bank of Ethiopia, which have constrained financial resources. Nevertheless, Ephtah remains unwavering in its commitment to investment and development. Plans include expanding drying facilities, improving infrastructure, and offering additional support to farmers, ensuring a resilient and thriving coffee supply chain for the future.
