Nyeri County boasts cool temperatures and lush, fertile highlands in Kenya’s central region. Nestled between the eastern base of the Aberdare (Nyandarua) Range (an extension of the Great Rift Valley ) and the western slopes of Mt. Kenya, it offers a picturesque landscape and an exceptional agricultural environment.
 
Nyeri town, the county's administrative hub, serves as a gateway for visitors exploring Aberdare National Park and Mt. Kenya.The region's combination of rich volcanic soils, seasonal rainfall, and high altitudes creates an ideal microclimate for coffee cultivation. These conditions yield coffees renowned for their bright acidity, full body, and notes of ripe fruit. The cool, elevated nights slow bean development, producing dense, high-quality beans with complex flavor profiles.
 
One standout coffee from the region is Gatugi, a lot produced by the Othaya Farmer's Cooperative Society (FCS), which operates 18 wet mills, many established in the late 1950s. The Gatugi Factory is situated at nearly 1,900 meters above sea level, alongside the Ichamama River, fed by the pristine Karima Forest.Approximately 500 active cooperative members contribute their harvest to Gatugi for processing.
 
The coffee cherries are meticulously floated to remove immature fruit before being pulped, washed, and dried. The cooperative also houses a dry mill where the beans rest in parchment for three weeks before undergoing hulling, cleaning, and size grading. This careful process ensures a consistently exceptional coffee characterized by vibrant acidity and remarkable complexity.
